KAWS: “FAMILY” Comes to SFMOMA
It’s official — KAWS is coming to the West Coast in a major way.
Opening November 15, KAWS: FAMILY at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) marks the artist’s first large-scale museum exhibition on this side of the country. For art toy collectors, design nerds, and pop art enthusiasts alike, this one’s shaping up to be a must-see moment — the kind that merges fine art, street culture, and that unmistakable KAWS playfulness.
A Look Inside “FAMILY”
The exhibition promises more than 100 works spanning 30 years of KAWS’s ever-evolving career — from early drawings and graffiti roots to massive sculptures, toy collaborations, and paintings that blur the line between commercial design and high art. Expect to see familiar faces: COMPANION, BFF, and CHUM — the crew that’s helped define an entire generation of collectible art.
At the heart of it all is the titular piece, FAMILY (2021) — a bronze sculpture that groups COMPANION, BFF, and CHUM into a surprisingly tender family unit. There’s something deeply human in their slumped shoulders and protective gestures — a reminder that under all the gloss, vinyl, and color, KAWS has always been about emotion. He turns pop culture into something we feel.
And yes, for those wondering: there will be plenty of toys, collabs, and cultural callbacks throughout the show. Even if you’ve followed KAWS since the early Medicom days or the first Companion drops, you’ll probably still find a few surprises here.
HOLIDAY Hits the Rooftop
But that’s not all. SFMOMA’s rooftop will also host KAWS: HOLIDAY SAN FRANCISCO, a 36-foot-tall inflatable COMPANION chilling on the terrace from mid-November 2025 through mid-January 2026.
If you’ve followed the HOLIDAY series — from Mount Fuji to outer space — you already know what kind of spectacle to expect. This one’s free to visit, so even if you don’t snag a ticket to the main exhibition, you’ll still get a piece of the experience (and let’s be honest, some epic photo ops).
Why It Matters
For those of us who’ve spent years tracking every drop, collab, and limited edition release, seeing KAWS in a major museum setting feels like a full-circle moment. It’s a recognition of how far art toys — once dismissed as “designer collectibles” — have come in shaping visual culture.
Whether you’re there for the emotional resonance or just to geek out over the scale and craftsmanship, KAWS: FAMILY is going to be the art toy pilgrimage of the season.
