COARSE: Sleepless Nights
After Buried Passion’s uphill climb through daylight, COARSE turns to the dark: that quiet space where thoughts echo louder than they should.
Sleepless Nights is an ode to what keeps us awake: the worries, regrets, and tender what-ifs that only visit when the world has gone still.
The Story in Stillness
In this sculptural duet, noop and paw! lie nestled in the unlikeliest of beds - hot-dog buns. It’s humorous at first glance, absurd even, but like all of COARSE’s work, there’s meaning beneath the playfulness.
The bun becomes a warm cocoon. paw! lies wide-eyed, restless; noop sleeps peacefully beside him. One haunted, one oblivious. It’s a contrast that says more about loneliness than distance ever could.
Sleepless Nights captures that strange contradiction of nighttime: how you can lie inches from someone and still feel miles away.
Because I Wanted You to Know & Secret Sauce
COARSE released two editions of Sleepless Nights, each painting a different flavor of insomnia.
Because I Wanted You to Know wraps the pair in natural tones: quiet, melancholic, like the final hours before dawn. There’s tenderness here: paw! staring into the dark, trying to form a truth he’ll never say aloud.
Secret Sauce, on the other hand, dives headlong into chaos; a surreal, psychedelic colorway that turns emotion into fever dream. It’s the inside of a mind that won’t stop spinning, thoughts tangled and bright, looping endlessly until morning comes.
The Midnight Condition
The artists describe Sleepless Nights as “an ode to the worries and cravings that only seem to find us after midnight.” That phrase “after midnight” feels essential. It’s not just about being awake; it’s about being alone with yourself.
COARSE’s brilliance lies in how they translate that feeling into sculpture. The figures aren’t dramatic. They’re still. Trapped in a soft, ironic setting that amplifies their vulnerability.
There’s humor - yes - but it’s the kind that hits close to home: the absurdity of lying awake replaying conversations, imagining better versions of events, feeling the weight of connection and distance at once.
In Sleepless Nights, insomnia becomes metaphor: a state where love, regret, and memory all start to blur.
Form and Feeling
noop and paw! are posed perfectly. noop is serene, his face soft with dreams; paw! is tense, open-eyed, mind racing. The contrast between them: one sleeping soundly, the other trapped in thought - captures the emotional imbalance that defines so many of COARSE’s stories.
It’s friendship, love, guilt, and anxiety compressed into one absurd little scene, beautiful in its vulnerability, painful in its truth.
The Morning After
The artist statement closes with a gentle reminder:
“Whether you stay awake or fall asleep, morning will wash away the anxieties of the night. So find a way through the darkness.”
In that line lies the comfort of Sleepless Nights. Morning always comes, and when it does, even the heaviest thoughts lose their sharpness.
COARSE reminds us that rest, in all its forms, is an act of faith. That even when our minds refuse to quiet, the world keeps turning toward light.
