Snowboarding emerged as a sport in the 1960s in America, when people were looking for new winter activities. Snowboarders began to "invade" traditional ski resorts in the late 1970s but were met with resistance by skiers who wanted to keep snowboarders off "their" mountains. However, by the 1990s, practically all ski resorts had allowed snowboarding, and the resorts had discovered that snowboarders were a great source of new income. Snowboarding first became an Olympic Sport in 1998. In the Winter Olympics, there are ten Snowboarding events. The giant slalom, a downhill event comparable to giant slalom skiing, and the half-pipe, in which athletes do tricks while sliding from one side of a semi-circular ditch to the other, each had two events, two for men and two for women.
