Norwegian major general Olaf Rye invented the sport in 1809, jumping an inevitably possible 9.5 meters. It became popular. In 1924, the event was featured in the first Winter Olympics in Chamonix. Competitors attempt to maintain perfect form as they slide down a ramp and launch themselves into the air. Each jump is judged on its flying, landing, and style by five judges. The competition takes place on two hills: a normal hill and a large hill. Hurling down a snow-covered ramp at speeds reaching 60 mph, jumping into the unknown, and landing more than 100 meters ahead. «Why?» is the first question that comes to mind.
