Skeleton is a good nickname for what appears to be the most frightening Winter Olympics event. Despite the intriguing name, the sport is very straightforward: Racers take a running start and then sled down an icy track. Headfirst! The name is possibly derived from the fact that the sled is so thin that it resembles a human skeleton. The skeleton event is performed over two days at the Olympics, with four heats. After four runs, the winner is determined by who has the lowest combined time. This is a sport in which every fraction of a second matters.
