Short track speed skating made its Olympic debut in the Albertville Olympics in 1992, and it has been a part of every Winter Games since then. Skaters compete counterclockwise in groups around a 111.12-meter oval-shaped ice track in short track speed skating. The track is about a quarter of the size of a long track speed skating track. The races, which are sometimes known as heats, usually feature four to six skaters. Athletes are not restricted to lanes, and only the turns are marked with seven markers each turn. In short track, skaters compete primarily against one another rather than the clock, which is one of the major contrasts from long track.
