Vermeer’s most famous painting is a "tronie," a painting of an imagined figure rather than a portrait. It is probably that this beautiful girl never existed, and neither did her pearl. Tronies often feature a certain kind of character. In the painting, a girl is dressed exotically with an oriental turban and a surrealistically big pearl in her ear. She is nicknamed the "Mona Lisa of the North." Well, our version definitely has the same grin… sort of ahah!
