Figure skating is an elegant sport in which ice skaters perform freestyle jumps, spins, lifts, and footwork in pairs or individually. Its name is derived from the patterns (or figures) that skaters make on the ice. Skaters accumulate points based on the degree of difficulty of each element and how well each element is executed. Figure skating debuted during the London Olympic Games in 1908, pre-dating the beginning of the formal winter games by 16 years.
