Earth Day
Today it has become difficult to list all the things that threaten our common home, planet Earth. Most of them have been created by us humans. To remind everyone of our responsibility for the Earth and to help initiatives to solve environmental problems, Earth Day was invented in 1969. After seeing the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, founder Gaylord Nelson, a former US senator, came up with the idea. He was inspired by the energy of the student anti-war movement and believed it was critical that attention be directed to air and water pollution. The day has grown from strength to strength over the course of its history as the world's greatest environmental movement and the most widely celebrated secular event, with over 1 billion people and more than 75,000 partners involved each year across nearly 200 countries.
