The oldest kind of skiing, cross-country skiing, arose from the need to travel great distances through snow-covered terrains such as those found in northern Russia, Northern Europe, and Canada. It might take the form of a recreational or competitive sport. Cross-country races, or Nordic races, are held over somewhat circular courses. This type of skiing is not as risky as other types of skiing, but it does need a lot of stamina, especially over longer distances.
