If you've ever tried "banana-flavored" foods, the thought has probably crossed your mind that bananas taste completely different! It’s true because the artificial flavor was modeled on a now nearly extinct variant of banana, the Gros Michel. Up until the middle of the 1950s, when a fungus decimated the world's banana crops, the Gros Michel kind was the most common banana variety consumed in the United States. In the 1960s, the Gros Michel banana was commercially replaced by the Cavendish banana, a more durable banana variation that we know and consume today. So, the taste of banana-flavored bubble gum is a heritage from the past!
