Competitors often reach speeds of up to 152 kilometers per hour, all while navigating a winding track with sharp turns and soaring jumps. Downhill skiing and the supergiant slalom, or super-G, are classified as speed events, whereas slalom and giant slalom are classified as technical events in modern Alpine competition skiing. Single runs down long, steep, rapid courses with few and widely spaced turns are used in the speed events. The technical events test a skier's ability to maneuver through courses marked by closely spaced gates that both skis must pass through; winners are determined by the fastest combined time in two runs on two different courses.
