DCON Highlights, Part 2

Previously, we discussed some of the newest releases presented during this year's DCON (among them, “Crown Jewels” by Kidrobot, created to celebrate the jubilee of Dunny; the mundanest alien by Ron English; and Sket One’s customization of the Chinese moon-rover rabbit, Robbi). Let’s proceed with the second part.

1. Astroboy x AKU Collaboration.

Yet another noticeable celestial release this year; it is definitely a trend. And there is no better option for reflecting space and science for a designer toy than the image of Astroboy. Born and bred as a pop-cultural yet mindful and profound discussion into how scientific development can affect our morality, now it is a brilliant artefact of an enthusiastic, hopeful era, when space and future seemed closer than ever in human history. Those days are gone, aren’t they? We have at least a beautiful pop-cultural heritage. Micah Johnson’s AKU and Astroboy collaboration is where the heir meets its glorious decedent. Space and dreams are now synonymous—benevolent or otherwise—and AKU captures this duality beautifully. The recognizability of Tezuka’s brainchild adds depth to this escapist imagery.

2. Bearbrick Coca-Cola Keith Haring Edition.

Bearbrick, Coca-Cola, and Keith Haring create a true pop-cultural vortex. What could they possibly share in common? Let’s try it like this: Keith Haring is a pop-art icon, renowned for making simplistic images that are able to be memorised and recognised, and what could be more recognisable than a bottle of Coke found in every store worldwide? This is so to speak an ode to the power of images—those that engrave themselves into our minds, wrapping around our thoughts just as these Coke and Keith patterns are imprinted on the thin film enveloping the plastic surface of this well-known bear.

DesignerCon reflected diverse creativity and innovation, yet these standout releases speak volumes about what captivates and concerns us today. Amid these reflections, there is much to celebrate—the triumph of craftsmanship and the longevity of iconic ideas.
